Witton Castle, Evenwood and Barony, Durham

Witton Castle probably dates from the late 14th century. The licence to crenellate was granted in 1410. It was partially demolished in the late 17th century after a fire and extensively altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. It has had many owners and has belonged to the Lambton family since 1963. It has been operating as a country park and caravan site for some years. The castle is used for the leisure complex administration and club buildings.
