Description

The photograph shows the construction of the new Coventry Cathedral, designed by Basil Spence in 1951 and constructed between the mid-1950s and 1962. It replaced the ruined Cathedral Church of St Michael, shown in the background, which had been badly damaged by bombing in 1941.

The caption below the photograph in the album reads "... In the foreground can be seen four Pile Boring Rigs belonging to Cementation in operation. The middle ground shows the cuts and fills of the completed formation levels to the Cathedral. In the background can be seen the three Spires of Coventry, these are namely the Spire of the Cathedral Church of Saint Michael and just to the right, the Spire of Christ Church, with the Spire of Trinity Church in the right hand quarter."

This image was catalogued as part of the Breaking New Ground Project in partnership with the John Laing Charitable Trust in 2019-20.
