Following the bombing of Coventry Cathedral in November 1940, a competition was launched in 1950 to find a design for a new cathedral. The winning design was by Sir Basil Spence (1907-1976) from one of over 200 designs submitted. Building work took place between the mid-1950s and 1962. Queen Elizabeth II laid the foundation stone on 23th March 1956. This photograph of an architectural model, probably made by the architectural practice Basil Spence and Partners, was taken by the photographer Reginald Hugo De Burgh (1917-1971), a photographer of British post-war architecture.
This image was catalogued as part of the Breaking New Ground Project in partnership with the John Laing Charitable Trust in 2019-20.
This is part of the Volume: JLP01/01/026 Coventry Cathedral Church of St Michael; within the Series: JLP01/01 John Laing Photographic Collection Project Albums; within the Collection: JLP01 John Laing Photographic Collection
